Ongoing programs

The Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association of Northern Alberta (SBHANA) was founded to address the specific needs of individuals with spina bifida and hydrocephalus in Edmonton and the surrounding areas. One of our flagship programs Camp Freedom was established to provide these individuals particularly children and youth with opportunities to engage in recreational and sporting activities while fostering a sense of community and independence. The Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association of Northern Alberta (SBHANA) was founded to address the specific needs of individuals with spina bifida and hydrocephalus in Edmonton and the surrounding areas. One of our flagship programs Camp Freedom was established to provide these individuals particularly children and youth with opportunities to engage in recreational and sporting activities while fostering a sense of community and independence. Camp Freedom is a four-day overnight camp held during the summer offering a range of themed weeks tailored to the interests of our youth participants. Through a blend of recreational and sports-focused programming such as Star Performers week sledge hockey wheelchair basketball adapted soccer and adapted baseball campers have the chance to explore various activities they may not have access to elsewhere. We collaborate with community organizations and businesses to maximize these opportunities ensuring that campers can lead active and fulfilling lives. In addition to Camp Freedom SBHANA extends support to its members through various initiatives. Our Support Fund assists members in covering the costs of medical or adaptive equipment emergency expenses hospital-related out-of-town trips and other disability-related needs. We also offer funding for educational pursuits publish informative newsletters organize social events like the Christmas Party and Summer BBQ distribute educational materials host the NoLimits Support Group and provide new parent welcome bags. Our annual fundraising event has evolved into an in-person 5KM and BBQ event bringing our community together to raise funds celebrate SBHANA's accomplishments and honor our members. This event symbolizes our commitment to promoting inclusivity empowerment and a vibrant sense of belonging within the spina bifida and hydrocephalus community.

New programs

The Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association of Northern Alberta (SBHANA) launched two new initiatives in 2023. In 2023 the SBHANA was invited in to attend the spina bifida clinics at the Glenrose Hospital where we can meet with individuals and their families to offer support and connection. The other new program offered is Work Outs with Morgan a online work out sessions to individuals across Alberta
