Free Lunch Program at King Albert PS: Each Friday throughout the school year members of The Centre make and serve homemade chicken noodle soup and cut vegetables for the staff and students at King Albert PS. We make enough for the entire school to have a bowl and have enough left over to give out to 5-7 families each week. We then do all the dishes and clean up the kitchen so it’s ready for the next group. Every week we have 5-6 volunteers give their time and energy for 3-5 hours. We make enough for the entire school to have a bowl and have enough left over to give out to 5-7 families each week. We then do all the dishes and clean up the kitchen so it’s ready for the next group. Every week we have 5-6 volunteers give their time and energy for 3-5 hours. Christmas Hampers: The Centre Community Church put together food and gift hampers for families in the neighbourhood who struggle with poverty. These hampers contained everything needed for a holiday meal along with about a week’s worth of groceries to help families through the holiday season. We also included gifts for the children. All of the groceries and gifts were purchased through donations given to The Centre and 30 hampers were put together and delivered by members of The Centre. There were approximately 25 volunteers who gave between 3-5 hours of their time. Grocery Delivery: Sporadically over the last year The Centre Community Church assisted local families who struggle with food security assisting them by purchasing groceries for their family. We also partnered with a local community garden The Edwin Binney Memorial Garden to deliver fresh produce to families in the neighbourhood. Over the past year we assisted over 25 different households through grocery and fresh produce delivery. There were 3 volunteers who gave between 2-10 hours per month.
New programs
King Albert Public School Bike Rodeo: In May The Centre Community Church held its first Bike Rodeo at the school. The goal is to make this an annual event. Over 70 bikes were fixed and tuned up making them safe for summer. 10 free helmets were also given out exchanging those that were broken for new ones. There were approximately 12 volunteers involved in the repairing of bikes inspecting helmets and barbecuing hotdogs for children and parents in attendance. Volunteers gave between 2-3 hours of their time.
