RISING SUN FOOD DRIVE FOUNDATION

For all programs Rising Sun Food Drive Foundation (RSFDF) volunteer drivers transport procured food donations to local food banks and meal programs. For the Food Rescue program volunteers immediately transport frozen cooked donations from the restaurant to food banks. For other programs RSFDF volunteers sort and package donations at the processing centre before volunteer drivers deliver them. 1) Food Rescue Two days per week RSFDF procures donations of frozen cooked meals from a local restaurant. 2) Door-to-Door Food Drive On the weekend during the food drive season volunteers hand deliver flyers to houses informing residents about the food drive. Volunteers return the following weekend to collect food donations and provide additional flyers in different areas. Volunteer drivers transport donations collected during the food drive to RSFDF’s processing centre. Since the COVID-19 pandemic RSFDF has used a canvassing model that minimizes face-to-face interaction. Residents are asked to leave donations in a bag or box outside their home with the flyer attached on the collection date. Residents are asked to make monetary donations by visiting RSFDF's website. This fiscal year the Spring Door-to-Door Food Drive ran from late April to mid-June covering most of ward 21 and parts of ward 22. The Fall Drive running from September to October covered parts of wards 21 23 and 24. 3) Food Donation Box (FDB) During the winter months RSFDF procures food donations by collaborating with schools businesses places of worship community organizations and other like-minded institutions to host in-house food drives. RSFDF provides the organizations with decorated boxes for donors to donate their food items. Volunteer drivers then pick up the filled boxes and transport them to RSFDF's processing centre. 4) Food Purchasing RSFDF makes purchasing decisions based on targeted food and personal items that are specifically requested by food banks or generally known to be in short supply. RSFDF times purchases to help offset food banks' seasonal shortfalls. The food items are transported to RSFDF's processing centre upon purchase. 5) Community Food Drive RSFDF collaborates with local elected officials to host food drives. RSFDF volunteer drivers transport the food donations to RSFDF's processing centre.
