MICHIF LANGUAGE REVITALIZATION CIRCLE SOCIETY

Language Gatherings - We showcase the 2019 Coloured Syllable Phonetic Learning System (CSPLS) and SpeakMichif.ca website encouraging participants to attempt pronunciations of Michif words and expressions. We demonstrate the different activities and methods we use to facilitate the integration of learning language and culture. We present the varied materials supplies and resources used in our Language Circles. We encourage and support other communities in starting their own Language Programs; whether for Michif or other Indigenous Languages. Language Circles and Classes - We facilitate multiple weekly Language Circles and host weekly Language Classes taught by our Fluent Speaker that allow participants to increase their Michif Language proficiency as they improve their vocabulary reading listening speaking and conversational skills through various learning activities; such as lessons opening and closing blessings bingo card games flash cards singing reading word games practice speaking and discussing Culture. We give (or provide access to) participants hard copies of lessons and CDs that they use to practice what they have learned outside of Language Circles or Classes. Language Kit (Website) - We create and upload Language lessons and audio recordings on various topics with the Coloured Syllable Phonetic Learning System (CSPLS) to our SpeakMichif.ca website. All of our activities are made available online for use digitally and in printable formats for in-person learning. We are working with a local Canadian Indigenous owned web company to continue building our user friendly website. When needed we distribute hard copies of resources to the Language Circle and Language Gathering participants. Community Outreach - We develop and display our own promotional and resource materials distributed when hosting a table or booth at various local events: National Indigenous Peoples Day and Orange Shirt Day. We increase awareness of inspire and create enthusiasm for learning Indigenous Languages and increase knowledge of available resources. We also give away promotional items and display various resources from other Indigenous and non-Indigenous organizations. We distribute free Orange Shirts (Michif phrase) to Metis children and Youth including daycare staff. Youth Mentorship/Apprentice Audio Engineering – Audio engineer trains Youth apprentices in all steps required to receive raw audio and process for use on our website.
