Our mission is to help each child of the community achieve his/her potential despite challenges whether they be physical developmental or social. We do so through a relationship based global approach in line with traditional Cree and Inuit philosophies. Our mission is to help each child of the community achieve his/her potential despite challenges whether they be physical developmental or social. We do so through a relationship based global approach in line with traditional Cree and Inuit philosophies. At Minnie’s Hope families are seen by a multidisciplinary team made up of a pediatrician/family physician social worker/HRA and a Cree or Inuk clinical associate in a welcoming and non-judgmental environment. Anyone the family would like to be present or the family gives permission for such as teachers or youth service workers significant to the situation are welcomed to the discussion. Children identified as having difficulties are referred for an in-house evaluation such as speech therapy occupational therapy and by a developmental pediatrician. Since our clinical associates actively particiapate in discussions they contribute their experience ensure cultural safety and have an opportunity to contribute to the care plan developed to help each child. The clinical associates can then schedule regular one on one sessions as appropriate. As well through different programs we offer various activities to children and families of Whapmagoostui and Kuujjuaraapik such as: stimulation play groups for pre-schoolers not attending daycare pre and post-natal groups moms/dads and tots’ activities nurturing and attachment activities budgeting workshops parental skills Walking Out ceremonies school readiness summer camps increasing protective factors for youth 8-12 years old activities aimed at preservation of culture and language and linking with elders along with many other activities. Services are on a voluntary basis and are free. To help participants attend the activities transportation is provided at no cost. All programs are offered in a way that ensures continuity of services are culturally specific innovative and sustainable.
New programs
New programs include a stimulation play group for 2 year old toddlers and support and teaching to parents. As well psycho-education was offered for families dealing with challenges of school absenteeism video game over involvement grief and loss. A nutrition and exercise program was also started.
