The charity has provided computers to numerous individuals in the Toronto and York Region communities. The computers were originally received as donations from within and around the GTA. We then deleted all information on any hard drives with military-grade data destruction using proprietary software from RedKeyUSB. Following we applied a version of Linux to use as the operating system. Linux is Free and Open Source software. It is also more efficient in how it runs than most other operating systems (e.g. MS Windows and Mac OS) on older hardware. Given that Linux Operating Systems are Free and Open Source there are no annual license fees of any sort nor do updates ever stop with the age of the computer. It is an operating system whose usability is lifelong. This makes it an ideal choice for supporting those in our communities who are below the poverty line and might otherwise not be able to afford licensing costs or upgrades needed (due to a computer becoming too old for updates). One member of the charity's administrators completed a course for successfully operating a Not-For-Profit. It was offered by the York Entrepreneurship Development Institute (YEDi) and titled the 'Entrepreneurship Development Program for Not-For-Profit Organizations.' We have made connections with local IT professionals and resource recycling locations to allow for eventual collaborations. We worked with a local case management agency to supply some of it's members with computers. The donated computers were invaluable to those clients with set disability incomes.
