Scouting Waterloo Region

Regular meetings for the Troop section (ages 11+) were generally at Laurel Creek Conservation Area every two weeks on Sunday afternoons for four hours. Activities included canoeing hiking Klondike Derby sledding snowshoeing first aid learning how to change car tires campfires and biking on local trails and at The Hydrocut mountain biking area. The Troop had five weekend camps plus the summer camp. Troop Summer Camp was a full week at Kelso Conservation Area on the Niagara Escarpment. Every day we went canoeing and mountain biking on their large trail network. We visited the high ropes course climbing tower and archery range. We cooked pizzas in reflector ovens and had campfires and wide games. Each of the two patrols had their own campsite and cooked in their own kitchen area. Regular meetings for the Bevy (ages 5-7) and Pack (ages 8-10) were also every two weeks on Sunday afternoons for 1.5 hours. Activities included canoeing hiking map reading sledding snowshoeing pumpkin carving biking on local trails feeding the birds and campfires. There was a fall day camp and overnight winter and spring camps. Scouting Waterloo Region held an all-section water polo evening in collaboration with the KW Kraken Water Polo Club.

Remembrance Day fell on the weekend this year. The Troop attended the observance at the Preston Cenotaph and then went on a hike. In April a total solar eclipse was visible from the Niagara region. The Troop held a solar eclipse camp. Everyone received a pair of ISO-standard eclipse glasses and training on eclipse safety. Activities included building eclipse viewers learning about why eclipses happen and of course viewing the eclipse. On the day prior to the eclipse the main activity was an 18 km kick scooter hike along the Welland Canal. The Troop visited the St. Catharines Museum the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame & Museum and watched a ship pass through Lock 3.
