Pallium Canada develops and implements a variety of educational courses entitled Learning Essential Approaches to Palliative and End-of-Life Care (LEAP) that train people on how to provide palliative care and are accredited by the College of Family Physicians of Canada and/or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. LEAP courses use an interactive case-based and modular approach and have been developed for different health professions (e.g. physicians nurses pharmacists paramedics etc.) and care settings including home communities hospitals care facilities and clinics. LEAP training courses are designed to enhance people’s knowledge skills and practice in providing high-quality palliative care. Research has demonstrated that healthcare providers who take LEAP experience significant improvements in their knowledge attitudes and comfort related to providing palliative care and there is evidence of learning applied in everyday practice. Pallium Canada develops practical resources tools and technology infrastructure that are both independent of and may supplement the educational courses and provide easy reference in everyday health care practice. Pallium Canada is strongly involved in conducting research sharing findings and best practices building knowledge and contributing to and collaborating with other key stakeholders. Pallium’s accelerates and enables the creation of Compassionate Communities across Canada by third parties connects them with one another and enables them to support collaboration and knowledge transfer and evaluate their impact. Pallium does not create compassionate communities themselves Pallium supports the creation and maintenance of compassionate communities by third parties.

The Palliative Care ECHO Project is a 5-year national initiative to cultivate communities of practice and establish continuous professional development among health care providers across Canada who care for patients with life-limiting illness. Leveraging Project ECHO’s 'hub and spoke' education model and through the leadership of hub partners the project will help health care providers build local capacity by equipping them with the knowledge skills and confidence along with updated tools and resources to help them provide earlier more effective and more compassionate high-quality palliative care to patients and their families.
