Northern Lights Regional Humane Society

The Northern Lights Regional Humane Society (NLRHS) is a non-profit member supporter organization that is dedicated to providing owner surrendered and homeless animals with shelter and food while attempting to place them in permanent loving homes. Ongoing programs include our Foster Care Program which places animals in home environments to gain socializing skills and training. We operate a Animal Shelter that allows animals in need to come from all over NW Alberta mainly serving the community of High Level as well as surrounding indigenous communities. The shelter also acts as a transfer for the municipal pound. The municipality operates on a 72 hour kill policy if the animals is not claimed. If the animals has not been claimed within 72 hours the shelter allows for the excess to be housed by NLRHS until a permanent home is found. NLRHS continues the volunteer program. Many opportunities are available for volunteers including fundraising dog walking and animal care. All potential volunteers are put through an orientation to show them what's involved and how to care for the animals in a safe manner. Volunteers are a vital part of the Society as they are needed to continue our program/operations. The microchip identification program also continues. Every animals adopted is chipped with the owners information. This ensures the dog gets home safely if lost. Approximately 25 volunteers put in over 1800 hours throughout the year organizing and carrying out various programs put on by the Society.
