FRESH ROOTS URBAN FARM SOCIETY

Good Food For All! Fresh Roots works towards ensuring that everyone has access to healthy land food and community. We do that through our three program pillars: Good Food (Poverty Alleviation) Experiential Learning (Education) and Youth Empowerment (Leadership Development). Good Food: Fresh Roots grows fresh food for the school and surrounding community. We train young people in agriculture to learn how to grow and share the food they grow thus ensuring that they have access to healthy food particularly when they do not have access to it at home or through other means. Experiential Learning: Fresh Roots host workshops field trips and volunteer opportunities and other programs to advance education towards our mission. Workshops field trips summee camps and volunteer opportunities are offered to youth to develop skills and confidence to grow and develop. Participants learn to grow food from seed and to build financial literacy take food to market thus learning how to budget make change etc. Youth Empowerment (Leadership): During the summer and after school we work with youth to build critical pre-employment skills as they learn how to grow cook share and develop a social enterprise. Youth are referred to the program from social service providers and help build the skills they need to succeed. In 2023 Fresh Roots worked with over 8 400 program participants engaging in over 26 000 learning hours and grew over 160 different crop varieties. We take pride in creating spaces where an incredibly diverse group of young people can come together to learn grow and develop relationships with other youth coming from different backgrounds and with different abilities.
