TURNING POINT ENSEMBLE

Based in Vancouver British Columbia Turning Point Ensemble is a large ensemble (core 16 instrumentalists) recognized for its outstanding musicianship. Founded in 2002 by its musician members Turning Point has a mandate to increase the understanding and appreciation of music composed during the past hundred years. The ensemble has built a strong reputation for linking seminal 20th century repertoire to contemporary works through thoughtful programming and innovative presentations. Uniquely and flexibly sized between a small chamber ensemble and a symphonic orchestra Turning Point Ensemble presentations offer a symphonic palette with a chamber music sensibility. These presentations include live concert music performances interdisciplinary and intercultural art-making collaborations 'creating composers' education programs recording touring and various forms of video content featuring new music.

Following its mission to increase the understanding and appreciation of music composed during the past hundred years and built on a strong reputation for outstanding musicianship and linking seminal 20th century repertoire to contemporary works through thoughtful programming and innovative presentations Turning Point presented 4 concerts in the 2023-24 season participated a co-partnership to present the opera Angel’s Bone in Toronto and toured to Montreal: • We started the season with a homage to composer Jocelyn Morlock. Her generosity to young composers and performers attention to important issues including mental health and championing of music deserving of greater recognition made a difference locally and nationally. We responded to her tragic passing with a major concert featuring three of her works for large ensemble. • In November 2023 we presented Harmony of Spheres featuring the inventive and original music of Richard Rijnvos and soloists Naomi Sato (traditional Japanese sho) and Timothy Chan (Chinese sheng). • In January 2024 we welcomed Argentinian-Spanish composer and conductor Fabián Panisello to lead Turning Point Ensemble in a bold and dynamic concert featuring chamber concertos. • In March 2024 some of our musicians traveled to Toronto to participate in the presentation of the opera Ange’s Bone part of our co-partnership with Arraymusic re:Naissance Opera Sound the Alarm/Theatre and Loose Tea Music Theatre. • In May 2024 we celebrated our 20th Anniversary with a concert and reception at SFU Woodward’s. • To conclude the season we traveled to Montreal where we were hosted by Canada’s largest and most historic new music organization the Société de Musique Contemporaine du Québec (SMCQ). This visit reinforced our ongoing commitment to expanding our touring efforts in alignment with our mandate.
