How late is T3010 data?

Charities file within six months of year end and the CRA processes returns after that. Charity Compass's F2024 dataset therefore describes fiscal years that ended a year or more ago.

What is a T3010, and what does it tell a donor?

The T3010 Registered Charity Information Return is the form every registered charity in Canada must file with the CRA within six months of its fiscal year end. It reports revenue, spending, assets, programs and directors, and most of it is published as open data, which is where Charity Compass's figures come from.

What is in it

Identification and address. A description of programs in the charity's own words. Financial lines for revenue by source (donations, government, other), spending by purpose (programs, management and administration, fundraising, gifts to other charities), and a balance sheet with cash, investments, capital assets and liabilities. A list of directors with whether each is at arm's length. Foundations also report gifts to qualified donees.

Full return or simplified return

Charities with revenue under $100,000 and modest assets can file a shorter version that leaves out the detailed expense breakdown. In the F2024 dataset 21,552 charities' filings lack the program line, so figures such as cents to the cause cannot be computed for them. Charity Compass shows nothing for those rather than an estimate.

The CRA List of Charities publishes each charity's recent returns. CharityData.ca presents the same data in a readable layout, and Charity Compass links every figure to that record so you can see the exact lines behind it.

Its limits

It is self-reported and not audited by the CRA at filing. It arrives a year or more after the fiscal year. It records money, not results: whether a program worked is not on the form. Charity Compass states all three on every profile.
