The Church was established in 1890 and is located in west downtown Hamilton. It serves a diverse population who live in the immediate neighbourhood and beyond offering worship services spiritual care and nurture as well as community development programs for youth adults seniors and those at risk for social isolation. St John's is a partner in arts programming providing performance space for amateur and professional musicians and a gathering place for the community. St John's is also active in refugee sponsorship poverty relief and advocacy and a provider of affordable housing.
