THE ORCHESTRA SOCIETY OF CALGARY

Over the course of the 2023-24 season Calgary Civic Symphony reached approximately 6 000 people through live performances and the Rotary Calgary Concerto Competition. Civic Symphony's annual five season concerts feature many Calgary-based and Canadian artists and composers with the fifth annual concert featuring the winners of the Calgary Competition for amateur musicians under 18. This provides the young people the opportunity to not only increase their visibility within the Calgary community but also to enhance their music ability and poise as they perform in front of a knowledgeable audience. Each winner also receives a bursary. This is a unique opportunity for young aspiring musicians to acquire experience playing with an orchestra which prepares them for competition at both national and international levels. Our audience ranges from young children to senior citizens and we have a strong subscriber base.bWe strive to remain accessible to the broader community by maintaining a price structure that is significantly lower than other performers in the same venue (Jack Singer Concert Hall). Our orchestra ranks are composed of highly skilled amateur and retired professional musicians; as Calgary has witnessed significant post-pandemic population growth Civic has served as a beneficial way for newcomer musicians to integrate into the community. In addition to volunteer musicians and board of directors the organization relies on many volunteers to assist in operations including volunteer positions of librarian media archivist webmaster program coordinator personnel manager production manager and front of house coordinator.
