Our Story Literacy and brain development are crucial globally starting from early childhood. Over 40 years ago the founders of One Step Learning began advocating for early childhood literacy in Calgary and Edmonton after immigrating from Ghana. With support from a Canadian couple they enrolled their children in licensed daycare despite high costs and minimal subsidies. They saw the benefits of early literacy when their children quickly developed. They promoted these ideas especially within African immigrant communities who often kept children at home due to daycare expenses. Government subsidies now reduce daycare costs lessening the need for such advocacy in Canada. In 2019 after visiting their hometown of Entumbil Ghana the founders assessed the community's needs with town representatives and donated part of their property to create an early childhood education facility for 30 years rent-free. One Step Learning Opportunities Centre (OSL) was incorporated in Alberta Canada to connect with supporters of early childhood learning. OSL obtained charitable status from the Canada Revenue Agency in August 2020 enabling it to issue tax credit receipts for donations. A daycare for children aged 0-6 started in Entumbil in October 2021. Support from various collaborators for the daycare has greatly impacted the community especially children girls and women. Literacy is a global phenomenon. The OSL non-profit early childhood learning daycare which serves children aged 0-6 aims to prepare them to become proficient bilinguals in both the local language and English. OSL's goal is to ensure that by age 4 to 5 children are ready for elementary school in the Entumbil community which serves 5 towns. The program focuses on the children's ability to translate every word and sentence they speak from their local language to English. Local languages include 'STEAM' (science technology engineering arts and mathematics) elements and activities. If children can translate and apply STEAM concepts in both English and their local language using their surroundings and the world around them literacy is considered achieved contributing to the child's overall development. This approach supports the growth of lifelong learners. A recent arrangement with the University of Cape Coast in Ghana to offer on-site training to our staff and children as funds become available will enhance the capacity of our staff to become early childhood educators and emphasize our bilingual literacy approach. The charity has finished the Concept-Planning phase and now operates a daycare in rural Entumbil Ghana for over 80 children daily. OSL seeks funding and collaboration with partners including Global Affairs Canada and its affiliates corporate sponsors public donors and institutions with early childhood education programs. Activities and Key Performance Indicators (KPI) going forward: • By 2026 acquire school van or bus to mitigate the risks associated with an overloaded aged 5-passenger vehicle that currently completes 8 trips daily between daycare and nearby towns. • Establish sister daycare pen pals between OSL and Canadian daycares by 2026. • Partner with 2 institutions for student/volunteer placements in Ghana daycare by 2026. • Conduct 6 OSL Collaborator Presentations. Publish 6 newsletters by 2026. • Increase daily attendance fees towards sustainability objective by 2027. • Maintain University of Cape Coast Early Childhood Learning training for staff. • Enhance the Innovation Children’s Learning Garden. • Secure grants to hire Engagement staff on strategic philanthropy Registered Charitable Purpose • to advance education by establishing operating and maintaining a learning through play daycare Centre in Entumbil Ghana; and • to undertake activities ancillary and incidental to the attainment of this charitable purpose.
